On 8th May 2000, qualifying for the Spanish Grand Prix took place. The battle between Michael Schumacher’s F1-2000 and Mika Hakkinen’s McLaren was very close. The German managed to squeeze everything out of his car and was fastest in 1.20.974, 78 thousandths faster than Hakkinen, to claim his 24th pole, the 129th for Ferrari.
However, roles were reversed in the race. Schumacher had a particularly troubled time, hitting the Scuderia’s chief mechanic, Nigel Stepney, at his pit stop and then suffering a puncture which meant he had to make a further pit stop. Rubens Barrichello saved Ferrari honour with a third place behind the two McLarens and ahead of Ralf Schumacher in the Williams, while Michael came home in fifth.
