The first race of the 2010 season took place in Bahrain on 14 March. The new long version of the Sakhir circuit, never used again after this race, made for difficult overtaking and, having started from pole, Sebastian Vettel in the Red Bull seemed the hot favourite.

However, in the race the Ferraris proved competitive and Alonso and Massa sat right behind the German. After a while the Red Bull began experiencing problems and Sebastian had to slow. Fernando and Felipe immediately pounced on their prey and moved ahead, to cross the line in formation with Alonso thus winning on his maiden outing with Ferrari, before dedicating the victory to President Montezemolo.

The Spaniard thus joined an exclusive club of drivers who won on their debut for Ferrari, which features Juan Manuel Fangio, Mario Andretti, Nigel Mansell and Kimi Raikkonen.
