One year ago today, just as now, Scuderia Ferrari was busy testing. The team was on track at Montmelo, near Barcelona, not in Bahrain like today. Driving the F138 was Fernando Alonso, the Spaniard setting a best time of 1.23.247. Testing last year bore no relation to what’s going on now, because the technical rules had hardly changed since 2012 and the glorious 056 engine was virtually unchanged. Most of the attention focused on the Pirelli tyres which had been modified according to instructions from the FIA, to make their behaviour more extreme, with better performance but less endurance, to make the races more exciting.
A different era to the one we are living through today, when the major changes to the technical regulations, both on the aero side and above all regarding the engine, has made life very complicated for the teams and drivers. They are currently still trying to get a handle on what sort of cars they have as the first race of the season draws near.
