On 16th December 2009, at the Mugello circuit, Felipe Massa ended what had been a very strange year, driving an F2007 for the second of two days of testing, organised as an early Christmas present for him by the Scuderia. After a long absence from racing, following the terrible accident of 25th July, during qualifying for the Hungarian Grand Prix and after a try-out at Fiorano in October, the Brazilian driver thus achieved his dream of getting back behind the wheel of a Formula 1 car before the end of a difficult year, which at least had a high point just over two weeks earlier, with the birth of his first child, Felipinho.
He rattled off around 60 laps by the end of the second day on track in the car which Scuderia Ferrari had taken to victory in the 2007 Drivers’ and Constructors’ championships. Felipe was very pleased and had this to say to www.ferrari.com before leaving for Brazil. “Even though I was at the wheel of a car that is completely different to next year’s, I had a great feeling, which makes me hopeful for next season. I was able to lap quickly right from the start and nothing seems to have changed in my approach to driving compared to before the accident. I want to thank Ferrari for this present, which along with my son makes this coming Christmas marvellous.”
