At the end of the 2009 season, the traditional Scuderia Ferrari lunch took place on 12th December. It was also the occasion to say farewell to one of the cornerstones of the team for the previous fifteen years. It had already been announced back on 6th October that year that Gilles Simon would be handing over the responsibility of running the Engine and Electronics Department to Luca Marmorini, but the Christmas festivities marked the official farewell to the French engineer from the team with which he had worked, first as an engine designer and then as head of the entire department. During that time, the V10s and V8s designed and built in Maranello won a total of six Drivers’ titles, eight Constructors’ and 106 Grands Prix. In fact, it was an engine Gilles had designed himself, the 056, that won the 2008 championship, which was given to him as a leaving gift.
