On 15th November 1987, Gerhard Berger won the Australian Grand Prix. The race in Adelaide was the final one of the season and before arriving there, the titles had already been decided. As had happened two weeks earlier in Suzuka, the weekend saw a steamroller performance from the Austrian and his F1-87. He took pole by seven tenths from Prost in the McLaren and was 1.3 clear of his team-mate Alboreto, who lined up sixth on the grid. At the start the champion elect, Piquet, caught Berger by surprise, but the Ferrari man was very quick to react and found himself back in the lead on lap 3. The Austrian stayed out in front all the way to the finish, also setting the fastest race lap, completing the first of two hat-tricks in his career: there was a wait of almost ten years, in German in 1997, for his second one.

With victory in the final two races of the year, it seemed to presage Ferrari being in the fight for the title the following year. Unfortunately, the expectations of those in Maranello and the fans were in vain: 1988 saw McLaren dominate, winning 15 of the 16 Grands Prix.
